Catching a Shark off the Florida Coast my First Time Fishing is the Sagittarius Thing I’ve Ever Done
I recommend that every woman and femme go deep sea fishing at least once in their life. Here's why...
Now the shark wasn’t the first fish that I caught, but it was the most memorable. Let me break this down for you:
Three women.
One is the boat captain.
The other two are me and another journalist.
Neither of us journalists had ever fished before.
We, obviously, had no idea what we signed up for.
Zero regrets.
The first couple of fish we caught were bait fish. They put up a fight but they were cute and we stored them away, live, so we could use them to catch bigger fish. Their sacrifice will always be remembered.
Then we drive out into much deeper water.
The first real fish I caught was an amberjack. It knocked me off my feet and dragged me across the floor of the boat. I was not wearing shoes, pants, or my dignity at that point so I had nothing else to lose. He put up a fight but I eventually reeled him in. That was the beginning of my power trip.

Next up was a red snapper. Much smaller and if it was in season, I definitely would’ve brought him back to shore and asked one of my newly acquired restaurant friends to cook him but, alas, he was not in season so I had to release him into the wild (much like all the men I’ve dated thus far).
Next up was the big one. The shark. Technically, Lisa, the other journalist, hooked him but all three of us took turns reeling him in. After about 30-40 minutes, everyone else was done but I was seeing red. This shark was mine. The captain said that it was close to 100 lbs and I said “Even better.” My entire body burned. I couldn’t feel my arms anymore and the point where the fishing rod dug into my hip was more numb than novocaine, but that shark was mine.
The shark dragged our boat deeper and deeper out to sea and the captain, Gabrielle, started to help me reel him using gloves to grab the line. She warned me that he would probably cut through the line any second now because shark fishing requires much more industrial fishing gear. I said, “Let him try.”
He cut through the line shortly after she said that and it broke my overly competitive heart. All those bragging points, swimming away into the bottomless blue. And all I wanted was a picture.
We moved the boat closer to shore where we saw several dolphin pods, a turtle, and a massive school of jack revells (one of which was my last, and sexiest, catch of the day).
Could I move my arms for the next two days?
Only within a limited range of motion.
Do I feel like the most powerful goddess to ever grace the Gulf of Mexico?
Duh.
Do I believe that every woman and femme should know what it feels like to catch a massive fish and hold it in their hands?
WITHOUT. QUESTION.
I know why this excursion gave me Sag energy, but what do you think?
