My Suitcase is a Capricorn. Let’s Discuss.
She means the world to me and now it’s almost time for her to retire (and I know she doesn’t want to hear that)
I bought this suitcase after my trip to Moscow. I wanted to burn my old suitcase set, but my mom suggested we just throw it out instead of accidentally burning out the neighborhood, so I tossed it and, eventually, went looking for a new set. My first set was black and inconspicuous. My mom always believed that suitcases should be in plain colors so that it doesn’t draw too much attention, but she would always tie something on the handle to help identify it. Ribbons, yarn, a special keychain, it was going on the plainest suitcase you’ve ever seen.
Do you remember Marie Kondo? The “spark joy” lady (who’s now recanting her life of tidiness)? Well, I never felt any kind of way about my suitcases. I mean, I think most people would agree with me when I say that it was just a thing to put my things in. Why would I care about it? But it wasn’t until I survived Moscow that I would look at my suitcase and be filled with disgust. It was a reminder of a place that hated me, wanted to hurt me, and succeeded. A suitcase, an item that’s necessary for long-term travel, made me sick to touch it. So I went out looking for a new one.
I bought this suitcase set in preparation for my first-ever, international solo trip. If you’re curious about it, I wrote about this trip for USA Today [INSERT LINK]. My mom and I went shopping at our favorite place: Marshalls. This suitcase set didn’t particularly stand out. I mean, it was just beige and had all the necessities, but it was perfect. And it had a larger version for chunky checked luggage, so I grabbed both. Fast forward a few years and these suitcases have traveled the world with me and helped me to start my career as a travel journalist.
While my suitcase doesn’t have a name, she has a LOT of personality. She’s all business (when it matters) and really wants to be left alone at all other times. She’s solid, decisive, loyal, and unwavering. As I look at her, squeaky wheels and banged-up zippers, I can feel her saying “Don’t look at me like that, we’ve got work to do” even though I know she’s on her last leg. This luggage set was a phenomenal investment and, it might be weird to say, but I feel like she invested in me, too. And that, my dears, is when you know a Capricorn truly loves you; when they invest in you.
It took a while, but my luggage set definitely sparks joy for me now. And, because I don’t want to destroy something that’s been so good to me, I’ll be looking for its replacement in the coming weeks (don’t tell her I said that!). So if anyone has any recommendations for luggage sets that they like, please let me know!

If you could give your suitcase a zodiac sign, what would you give it?
